Over-zealous policing/mistreatment of sinners is hard enough to avoid when your faith has those balancing concepts. Because humans suck. Without even having that framework? There’s no limit, and really no way to even argue there SHOULD be.

Deciding who is telling the truth is was perhaps easier in “everyone knows everyone” smaller communities. On the scale of the modern USA? Tough. Many things don’t scale well.

YES! Not to blaspheme too hard, but I’m not convinced that Biblical guidance is all that helpful, for exactly this reason. They’re rules for an Iron-Age desert people, living in Dunbarian communities. Some concepts may still translate, but not all. And definitely not mechanics.
