1/ehhhh there's SOME truth here, but it's only part of the story government mandated emission controls and fuel efficiency standards have a ton to do with it - diesel tractor engines now have mandated DPF filters, which are controlled by microprocessors to run a burn off cyclehttps://twitter.com/jeffnolan/status/1337267106165886976 …

these tractors sold for about $25k new in 1980. 40 years later, they sell between $30-40k not because they are rare. Farmers are rejecting new tractors because mfg’ers are hostile to right to repair. Old tractors going back to work https://www.tractorhouse.com/listings/farm-equipment/for-sale/53639659/1980-john-deere-4440 …

2/ but this only applies, IIRC, at certain HP or engine displacement size, or something, so the ~ 30 HP cat 1 tractors are still free of DPF / DEF etc

3/ Part of the reason that old tractors sell for a decent amount of money is ... THEY STILL WORK. Tractors, whether we're talking a 1960s Ford N series, or a 2005 Kubota, are built out of big steel parts, and not too many of them. The fact that they hold value may seem weird

4/ to people who see cars lose 15% of their value the second they roll off of the dealer's lots, but a tractor is closer to table saw - there are Powermatics from 1950 that work just as well today as they day they were delivered (bc they're overbuilt, well maintained

7/ No, because there is a distinction. If I sell a tractor for $X and parts for $Y, then I create price discrimination where a less wealthy person can buy the tractor but repair his own parts / ad hoc, and the other guy can buy factory parts >>>https://twitter.com/SumErgoMonstro/status/1337799526694985736 …

Then be honest and lease the Item to people instead of “selling” them. Telling someone they own something but can’t repair it themselves is BS.

8/ this creates more utility for both buyers and sellers ; setting one price creates "deadweight loss" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadweight_loss … also, I reject your framing "just be honest". It is perfectly honest to sell a tractor and also parts / manuals / code testers.

9/ yes, the marketing / concept is wonderful ...but the reality is that it's just USG mandating that vendors can't sell their manuals (thus reducing incentives to create good manuals) and other similar idiocyhttps://twitter.com/jcenters/status/1337800395343753219 …

I’m in favor of right to repair in theory, but I don’t know how it would be enforced, especially by ham-handed, technically incompetent governments. Would Apple have to design MacBooks like old ThinkPads? (Which would be kinda cool tbh.)

Corollary points often unconquered by people when they compare tractors to cars - old tractors are easy to maintain, with rustic machinery. They're usually high-frequency low-intensity maintenance, meaning that a if you're a decently skilled farmer, you can maintain it yourself
