For REAL though. I'll give a pass to the ones starting space companies, but everyone else has something to answer for.

My mandate would be "Start with Green & Green, mix in some Japanese traditional architecture and tile roofs, add a decent dose of Hobbit Hole ...but don't hold back on the wood, craftsmanship, and detail" (1% Gaudi would not be unappreciated in the mix)

That's probably not exactly the mandate I'd end up with from scratch, but one I'd feel no remorse signing onto. My From-Scratch house fantasy always seems to involve a modified Japanese interior courtyard, whatever else changes

> That's probably not exactly the mandate I'd end up with from scratch, yeah, the wealthier a society / individual gets, the more one can afford to amplify trivial preferences and really go out on a limb so, if you and I each had a $100k budget, we'd pick identical >>>

at $400k budget, we'd start to see divergence, and at $1B for a mansion, I'd say "oh, no, no, no, this underwater swimming grotto has JUST the wrong pattern in the marble - this is dead to me"

Amazing, I have zero memory of that scene. I've never made it out to Cali to go to the Getty, but every time I see images from the villa, that's what gives me a small spike of regret that I'll never be ludicrously richpic.twitter.com/6nbeYPDDT7

yeah, so THIS is EXACTLY what I'm getting at when I say "I dream [ literally ] of a small asteroid w 1 g gravity with the surface wrapped with an Italliante villa with marble, gardens, and terracotta tile roofs"

They live in something akin to this in the chronologically-latest sections of Time Enough For Love, don't they? I think that also left a mark for me.

It's sort of a strange one, because it blends a lot of (basically) amazing early-career novellas with a lot of late-career weird Heinlein sex stuff. I highly recommend approximately half the book.
