I hate that ”apple esthetics”, where the technology is hidden and not flaunted, like in 80’s & 90’s tech. Stereos with big flashy VU-meters and cassette players with lots of buttons and lights

That died with the Connection Machine. Indicator lights for 65,536 processors ... usually set to just blink randomly. Meters & buttons & lights just are so orders of magnitude below relevance on systems with hundreds of billions of transistors running at GHz. Need wall screens.

small world: I worked at OpenMarket in 1995, which moved into the Carter Ink building in Cambridge MA ... occupying space that had just been vacated by Thinking Machines Corp a week earlier. I had some of their abandoned collateral in my cube for a while.
