I should have said *my* fiction. I have a terrible memory for names and I frequently forget the names of people I've known for years. I compensate by giving all my characters memorable or descriptive names so I can remember them.

This probably falls under style. I enjoy the more style-conscious side of SF, but I also enjoy epic Hard SF which tends to have a more utilitarian style. Dune manages to do both. I like the way the background material is integrated into the text as quasi-religious writings.

The problem usually is not that it's useless it's more that the people who have done it are making it very poorly.

I'd like to see it done with drop in notes in e-books. Also maps, diagrams, etc. I've only seen this done in Terry Pratchett books.
