I rewatched Blade Runner 2049 a few days ago and ... it's growing on me. It's absolutely a worthy heir to the original, and works on a ton of levels.

also, I'm in general not at all consumerist - I am happy to spend money on tools, because they give me capabilities, but I don't tend to want things that just ... exist. That stand for themselves. And yet, I have some non zero desire to own one of the limited edition JW bottlespic.twitter.com/DMCpTXGsn8

2/ It's fairly silly to hand over good useful cash for a ... _thing_ ... that one just puts on a shelf. So I likely will not ever buy one. ...but ever few years I understand the normie style "collector itch".

Just watched that pretty recently too, thought it was great. Thought it was probably crafted better than the original, but lacking some X-factor weird virtue of it, but definitely great and WAY better than we had any right to expect.

I love 2049! I saw an interview with the director where he said he watched the final cut for the first time and though, oh shit I fucked up. I made a $150 million art-house film. They'll never let me do this again! I thought that was hilarious.

2/ There was, IMO, only one thing Blade Runner did that the sequel failed to do: be absolute unique and genre breaking. and... you know, that's baked into the word "sequel".https://twitter.com/kendrictonn/status/1333861410552623116 …

Hell it even managed to live up to the soundtrack for the original, which is an achievement in itself.

I will argue that it surpasses the original in every way except maybe the general feel/atmosphere of the world. There's a 'slickness' to the new one that belies the grit & grime of the world it portrays. Cinematography alone blows my mind. Plot was immaculately executed.

Aside from K's rather hamfisted internal monologue of 'Who am I?!' is it an absolute gem of contemporary cinema, especially wrt what surrounds it. Covers a ton of alternative ground, doesn't disrespect the original, sets its own pace and manages to feel unique.

I love the fact that there’s a memory “artist” in the film. That aspect alone is worth the price of admission.
