3/ HIS manager was appalled, told him to apologize. So the first manager took me aside, hemmed and hawed, then told me about Prussian military academies wargames for 30 minutes, then told me that he had a meeting, so "good talk!"

I would contend that there are bullies/abusers in every industry/field, but some academics are so sheltered from the usual rough-and-tumble of life outside academia that they over-report [and possibly exaggerate some of] their negative experiences. (Also STEM/humanities divide.)

In private industry, if you're abusive towards productive people, they'll leave to work for your competitors.
