Anecdata from a friend who is president of a homeschool coop in Atlanta says that this year is markedly worse than baseline. And this is among families who already homeschool and give their kids more normal lives.

I've seen almost all and its opposite on the mental health effect of lockdown on children. I think adults (as usual) completely overestimate how good highschool actually is and it's mainly a place of suffering for a lot of teenagers

“Can’t handle it” kicks in when life goes well outside range of experience. Hence the importance of giving kids a broad range of experience safely, so they can handle extremes with “been here done this” instead of “OMG I’m gonna die”.

@politicalmath Don't forget that the perspective of pain is always relative. American youth of today are unquestionably the most privileged of all such units in history. But the perception of struggle is psychologically compared to baseline of experience. -
Not to say that the differentials of American youth are greater than, say, the European youth of the world war II era. But it's reasonable to at least recognize what changes US youth have experienced over the last year as a measure of their pain.

The people complaining about the 'kids are resilient' line in my parenting groups have incredibly shitty doom and gloom attitudes towards any adversity their kids face and I'm convinced they pass this expectation along to the kids, a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Like, you can judge something to be bad but also have a make-the-best-of-it attitude, or entirely re-adjust your expectations stoic-style. These aren't contradictory.
