Google killed RSS not because it shut RSS down, but because it shut most user-friendly and accessible way for people to read their feeds. For most non-tech folk it was hard to migrate somewhere else for RSS, and social networks at the time offered a "better" alternative.

I really like the vector of growth of telegram app and protocol. It has advantage of being the most usable messenger, so it's gaining popularity because of that. And it has almost everything google reader had.

In Russia telegram quickly became one of the more popular ways to follow news and blogs because everything else is controlled by government. It became such a phenomena we had a TV series this year based on culture around it.
