When I started at my painting academy, we incoming twenty-five students were gathered for orientation, and the director said, "Look, this is not an art school. The most we can do is give you a selection of tools, that you then may be able to use to make art." (1/)

The first year or so was drawing. Charcoal and pencil, we drew the model, we copied 19th century instructional drawings, and we drew from plaster casts. Proportion & light effect. Anatomy. So many critiques like "Hmm. Isn't the cheek a line-width too wide?" (2/)pic.twitter.com/WeMutYrPFC

Evening class with two-hour model drawings, trying to get the big light & shadow shapes, and the proportion and gesture. You'd get yelled at if you tried to add details or halftones. I did evening drapery studies in charcoal at home, trying to internalize certain lessons. (3/)pic.twitter.com/5kOu8tU3yh

Second year, they let me start painting, the model half the day, plaster casts the second half. In monochrome, then in a limited palette. We hired extra models on the weekends for a little extra drawing time. (4/)pic.twitter.com/dnoDyUW5Qq

Third year. We called it the Year of Dudes--ideally, classes alternated male and female models, but sometimes, needs must. They let me add colors to my palette and start painting still life. We hired extra portrait models, and took turns posing for each other. (5/)pic.twitter.com/ZugBII6igm

Fourth year. Much the same. Nudes, portraits, still lifes. Critiques are getting harsh. One of the instructors took quite unkindly to my underdrawing for a portrait, and everyone else in the studio gave me "there but for the grace of God" looks for the rest of the day. Ten years later: nudes, portraits, still-lifes. It took me a couple years to find my feet after school, but here we are, chopping wood, carrying water. Lucky to still be doing it. (7/7)pic.twitter.com/I3nsJl06pP
