Our chattering classes aren't eating the cultural seed corn - they're throwing it in a septic tank and laughing bc it makes their enemies mad. Famine is coming.

Explain. That's too many metaphors there

Seed corn is what you keep to sow next year’s crop of corn. “Eating the seed corn” is the term for using up now what you’ll need later to perpetuate survival of the group. Getting mad at others for “eating the seed corn” is justified. 1/

Morlock is observing those eating the seed corn are doing so not because they’re hungry now, but because they’re amused by others getting mad at them destroying what society needs to survive. /2

also, "seed corn" in a literal sense is, yes, as you say. It's often used figuratively to mean things like "the money we need to buy new computers next year", etc. In this case I'm talking about CULTURAL, not FINANCIAL capital.

Right. So what is your definition of "Cultural Capital"?

skills, norms, social structures, dispute resolution mechanisms, tools for promoting people, respect for competence, etc what's the difference between the US Army and a random 500,000 people selected from around the world and handed guns and tanks? cultural capital

That's a bit different from what seemed to be meant from that article you briefly linked to. And the army analogy makes no sense. If you are saying "the elites" are no longer adhering to previous forms of your laundry list above, you might sort of have a point. /1

the army analogy makes perfect sense tell me: if every soldier disappeared today, and you were king, how would you reconstitute an army? You'd hire 500,000 soldiers ... and now what? There are insane amounts of social norms, processes, etc you have to regeenerate. You have to

build the technology of recruiting, measuring, training, promoting, dealing with conflicts. You have to build and teach myths and norms. You have to create songs and traditions and the concept of honor. That's social capital.

I got it, fwiw. Did appreciate the clarification, though- I got the gist of the original tweet, but not so clearly as to make further clarification redundant.
