"We must cut back on fossil fuel use to save the planet!" Big part of the population stays home and stops driving anywhere. "We must tax those people so they pay their fair share for infrastructure they aren't using!" Methinks they don't really believe the former.

This, literally, is why Oregon (and sadly some other states, I think CA at one point) keeps flirting with mandatory GPS transponders in cars, to arrive at a miles-driven tax to pay for road maintenance.

I have gotten some pushback on this read of his proposal, but how else does the government spend money it doesn’t have? If it was another round of helicopter money, there would be no reason to bring up personal savings.
