Whenever a leftist seriously suggests that median manual laborers can code, it reminds me that some people have zero conception of what real knowledge work is actually like / how hard it is, what the IQ distribution is really like, or how rare top tier intelligence is.https://twitter.com/CurtisHouck/status/1324896645297954816 …

2/ ...and this makes it clear that these folks live in a world where intelligence really doesn't matter, and doesn't predict outcomes. They world is one of perceptions, bullshit, justifications, spin, and more. Eloi.

Karl K. Gallagher @KarlKGallagherI read Freddie deBoer's The Cult of Smart to see the take of a leftie who does believe intelligence matters. He went on at great length about how schools sort for intelligence and there's some people who just can't learn algebra. https://twitter.com/MorlockP/status/1325059484339875840 …Show this thread3 replies 1 retweet 13 likesShow this thread -

Ideoprax @IdeopraxReplying to @MorlockPThe difference in 'intelligence' between a Calculus inventing Newton, and a burger flipping Yahoo isn't that big, regardless of IQ scores... The X axis is just extened to make 'smart' folks feel better aobut themselves than they deserve. If Chimps can learn how to use tools...2 replies 1 retweet 16 likesShow this thread -

5/ No. This is a well studied topic, and IQ / intelligence is real, replicates, predicts dozens of things, and is even strongly correlated w reaction speed.https://twitter.com/Ideoprax/status/1325255086474399744?s=19 …

José Camões Silva @josecamoessilvaThis is almost precisely the opposite of reality; the difference between good and great and between great and excellent in knowledge work fields is, if anything, increasing by orders of magnitude. IQ too coarse a measure here. Or, in@MorlockP's shorter version: No. https://twitter.com/Ideoprax/status/1325251359151587328 …1 reply 0 retweets 10 likesShow this thread -

Ideoprax @IdeopraxReplying to @ouranometrian @MorlockPDidn't say there's no difference, just that it's not as big as the difference you see looking at a 0-200 IQ plot. Yeah, you need to be a genius to invent new maths, but people far less smart are capable of learning what you did and how to do it themselves.2 replies 0 retweets 12 likesShow this thread -

8/ Eye / hand reaction speed correlates something like 0.5 with IQ, IIRC. Mechanical puzzles. Word problems. Back before universal literacy everyone knew who was clever and who was slow.https://twitter.com/Ideoprax/status/1325256079253626880?s=19 …

9/ I agree with your cabinetmaker analogy. Most people couldn't be cabinetmakers, FWIW. It's a skilled craft.https://twitter.com/MutualArising/status/1325257114365923329?s=19 …

Eric w/ one wild life @MutualArisingReplying to @MorlockPNah. I’m a coder that has consistently scored 135-140 in IQ tests over the course of my life. Much of what I do is basic tradework, craft, care. No different than a decent cabinet maker. There’s a place for new algorithms but much code is just a trade that most ppl can learn.5 replies 0 retweets 25 likesShow this thread

People w/o the ability to consider 2nd and 3rd order consequences will never be able to code if/then/else statements that work efficiently, or for/next loops that produce the correct output

And gawd forbid these *coders* have to deal with the Oracle special function "having" Might as well just toss a grenade into the server room
