8/ My philosophy is that you are responsible for your own education. If you want to learn something, go research it. If, and only if, you've tried looking for data and can't find it, should you consider imposing on someone else.

9/ This is manners (cultural norms), utilitarian ethics (you only use your own time instead of using both your own and someone else's) and virtue ethics (it is virtuous to be self actuated and to self educate). /exeunt

11/ srs, tho, I think that part of the problem is that extroverts see "human interaction" as a BENEFIT, so asking someone is FUN - you BOTH GET TO HAVE A TIME, yapping & sharing mouth-sounds at each other all right thinking people realize, of course, that interaction is a cost

12/ ok, interesting tangent and I'll double tangent: I think it's fine to say "hey, I googled XYZ - are you using it in the stock meaning, or is there a nuance to your use?" https://twitter.com/illiteralworst/status/1321459608293048320 …

13/ there are some google dives that are hard, but most are easy I always google the bare term before responding "what did Google say when you googled 'XYZ' ?". https://twitter.com/ZeroBolusZero/status/1321459764820381696 …

🍂 The Pectrichory 🍄 @The_PetrichoryReplying to @MorlockPThere are bots that were written on a lot of social media platforms to provide people answers to frequently asked questions. They're almost universally despised. This says to me that people asking common questions don't want your answer. They want your attention.1 reply 0 retweets 9 likesShow this thread -

I already knew that most people are just attention seekers by the butthurt complaints the mods get to in response to removal of posts when a simple search (or often just reading the pinned FAQ) would have served them well.1 reply 0 retweets 5 likesShow this thread -

18/ I learned this, hard, at my first job, from a senior engineer. She'd only answer questions if I explained the first two or three things I'd tried before coming to her. https://twitter.com/illiteralworst/status/1321476382044483585 …

Replying to @MorlockP
Somewhere I learned the phrase “rubber ducking” and I love it. Every problem solver has had the experience of describing a problem and realizing the answer halfway through the story. “Next time tell your problem to a rubber duck before you interrupt me.”

More than once I asked
@AetherCzar a scientific question only to figure out the answer five minutes after sending it.
I still find it helpful to think out loud when developing plot ideas. My studio partner gets revenge by telling me the plots of his favorite bad movies.
