"UBI will free people to pursue great works of art" is a mistaken notion in multiple ways. No one should embrace this nor propagate it. We should not expect or demand UBI recipients to do anything more than pursue their own desires, as worthless as any other might find them.

This is not an argument against UBI, though. It's simply demolishing a terrible, horrible "argument" in favor of it. UBI is a good thing on its own merits. There should be no illusions about it.

And as to your other point, regarding this summer's events: it seems quite repugnant to me to say "we must not help these people, because we need them to work in order to prevent them from becoming violent".

well, i think maybe not helping people is not the same thing as exporting and automating their ability to earn a living away, and then giving them a small allowance to compensate them for a life bereft of opportunity.

far better to create economic policies that let people generate real value and self-esteem. UBI feels like giving up, doesn't it?

“We don’t need you, but we’ll feed you anyway, but only if you do this make-work that we’ll pretend we need. It’s better for you, trust us.”

probably better than other historical alternatives, like drafting them and sending them to fight and die abroad in make-wars we pretend we need. i mean, we still have those of course, but just for volunteers.
