Funny you should ask; earlier today I was discussing with friends how it's a hard problem and I have no idea how to solve it.

Generally yes, but there is Larry Niven. Outlier? Or is there a subset of trust fund babies that take financial independence as freedom to undertake endeavors that may not pay off financially? FWIW another trust fund baby I knew did painting, but never sold much.

If I were wealthy enough to leave my kids a trust fund I wouldn’t want them to amount to anything either. I’d want them to enjoy their lives while being good people.

Most people don’t amount to anything. Most people also have to sacrifice the vast bulk of their lives to sustain themselves. Were my children fortunate enough to be able to live their entire lives rather than the few meager hours per day that most people get, I’d be ecstatic.

I feel like Victorian England had a bunch of wealthy kids who became Egyptologists and Natural Philosophers. But they were supported by a culture of noblesse oblige .
