The game theory of an open letter that is about exactly one person but that could plausibly be about several different people is tough. I wonder if the real subject will confirm.

One factor here: some people can quickly ID who it’s about. A much larger group of people can ID the slightly larger set of people it might be about. And the former group is more circumspect out of professional courtesy.
