It's time to admit it: "The Outsiders" is a crappy book.

5/ It is of zero import to anyone in the real world. If it's not pushed on you in middle school, there's no reason you SHOULD have heard of it. In a better world, without teacher unions, only 300 people would know of it.https://twitter.com/EricRichards22/status/1316807722067734531 …

Like "fight club" and "on the road", they're perfect at a very specific age. I went back to reread my old taped up and well loved copy of "on the road" a few years ago, and just about threw it across the room. It's a book for a boy aged 17-22, beyond that the magic is gone.

Literature teachers: >>Hyperfocus on postmodernist reinterpretations of the 15th use of the word "an" on page 135 >>Can't give the historical or cultural context of the work being studied and why that makes it important Your hypothesis checks out.

I don't think it's explicit. It's just that most of the deciding is done by females.

Actually, The Outsiders being a crappy book is what makes it perfect for high school English class - those classes only serve to make students hate the books they read.

Read Catcher too late. I was 21-22, but the protagonist was insufferable. I’m told I would have enjoyed it if I’d read it at 14-16. Perhaps, but I doubt it.

Never had to read either one in school Helped that the English department was staffed with folks that HATED Cather in the Rye and refused to make us read it We were too busy reading a whole mess of other books. Some good. Some bad and some occasionally outstanding.
