There are nerves that provide feedback on the strain level in tendons to limit applied muscle force. That makes the occasional "superhuman" effort plausible as just overriding the safety limit. Horrific powerlifter tendon tears show some can certainly get past it. \

I wonder what fraction of strength training is modifying the observation of the limit versus truly strengthening the muscles, and if there are genetic correlates. Some people seem stronger than their muscle mass would indicate.

I've read that neurological training is, indeed, ~ 50% of what's going on this is measuring what percent of muscle fibers are activated ("muscle fiber recruitment") can't cite sources off hand, sorry
