At its root, sacrifice means make sacred. It didn't start out with the connotations it's picked up in modern English.

Also afaik people (priests or owners depending on the specific ritual) actually ate most of the meat afterwards, they weren't throwing it away after the ritual. Most of the sacrifices were not holocausts.

More likely the culling of young males became a recognized necessity first and later accreted rituals adding to the process. Entertainment options were pretty limited back then.
