1/ I've followed @Chris_arnade for a while, read his book, thought a lot about how the low end of the ladder is losing its sense of community and place...but only recently have I started realizing that my own sense of rootlessness and lack of community isn't just me & my oddness https://twitter.com/Chris_arnade/status/1314923444816031745 …

2/ Certainly when you're high IQ / skill / conscientiousness you can weather upheavals a lot better than you can when you're back-row class - more likely to have savings, more likely to be self aware and note that feelings are transient, less likely to try heroin to fix things

3/ I continue to think that our society is in a once-every-500-years upheaval, comparable to, say print-press/end-of-feudalism/establishment-of-Westphalian-system ~ 1500 AD, or collapse of Rome ~ 500 AD

Replying to @Chris_arnade
As with many men my age (40s), I "have no friends". ...and yet, I spend hours per day in a Slack with 30 or 40 guys who I'd give a kidney to, and we all live for the one weekend a year that we get together at my farm, drink, and roast a pig. Interesting times.
