People like that are why I switched from calling myself atheist to "lapsed agnostic". (reeeee)

agnosticism is the only rational attitude (I said that as an irrational theist). Both theism and atheism preach certainty about something ill defined and neither provable nor falsifiable.

I used to find atheist was mostly read as "no religion" and the "all religions are dead wrong" people were an extremist subset or so, and "agnostic" more "maybe, maybe not, but considering it". Hence "lapsed agnostic" to clarify "unfalsifiable so I don't bother thinking about it"

I quite liked "antitheist" to mean the people who had an active belief in the absence of deities but language is a tool for communication and it never caught on, so, *sigh*.

there’s a fight over the term atheism. on one side it means “absence of belief” and on the other it means “belief a god doesn’t exist” or “claims god doesn’t exist”

the "absence of belief" people lost the fight 30+ years ago, maybe longer /shrug

I think 20 years ago I was in a bubble where that wasn't yet the case. But, yeah, for the vast majority of purposes, we lost, hence why I rebranded.

The trouble with “lack of belief” is it requires ignorance of a proposition. Once one engages the proposition, one can no longer claim to lack belief about it; they must come down for, against, or undecided. Agnostic has always been the word for undecideds.

but one need not engage the proposition! I have no opinion on whether there is an alien artifact on Pluto. I have no data, don't care, can't be expected to have an opinion.

if you do not encounter the proposition then you do not believe the proposition. (for clarity: “not believing” is not always “disbelieving")

well, I think that @shadowcat_mst , @AndToddsaid and I have all said our pieces and are all generally agreed on what common usage is, so I don't think that there's much left in this topic that's interesting
