I'm glad! It's worth noting that, although I don't think I'm saying anything too eccentric, I'm coming at it from personal practice rather than deep familiarity with academic discussion.

I tend to find academic discussion of the Humanities tends to filter through political views badly, so I actually prefer the grounding of practice.

I tend to agree, or even without politics, sometimes I read something from an art historian (I don't have a specific example at hand), and think "I'm pretty sure X was just caused by the realities of working, not what you're attributing it to"

I remember Freshman yr in college an English professor was arguing that the refinery flares at the begining of Blade Runner were mushroom cloud like to suggest nuclear war, and I was like "um... that's just the dynamics of hot gas rising through cold air"
