We can actually function just fine on low sleep. I think a lot of confusion about health comes from taking the modern medical/fitness idea as the "default" and everything else as "unhealthy" and therefore "will kill you" Remember we evolved to be able to function in the world.https://twitter.com/nickcammarata/status/1314249744500183045 …

Why would we evolve for infants to wake up every 3 hours? People can’t function on low sleep, so they’ll surely make worse parents. Unless it’s physiologically nearly impossible for evo to make them sleeping 8hrs safe, it seems like terrible design for everyone involved?

yeah, this is such a dumb / lazy take "thing X is degraded by 20%, therefore there's NO POSSIBLE REASON for it" like, maybe a parent being tired is a good trade off vs an infant that has a very very small belly and wants a constant level of blood glucose ?

There's that but I also think modernity and especially the fraction of modernity that is abstract reasoners is disproportionately likely to care about the effects of sleep dep on the ability to do what they want, as compared to the vast majority of people now and in the past.

sure or to partially restate: only for someone designing a compiler for a programming language or polishing a brief for a hard fought court battle does that last 1% of marginal cognitive ability matter for the other 99% of people / jobs, 75% on top of your game is good enough

eh, even then. there's a fair amount of arbitrariness being swept under the rug by these people. as recently as a couple of centuries ago, people in europe used to get up in the middle of every night for an hour or two, then go back to bed.

1% on a brief don't matter because you can't control whether the judge slept or not, which is the only thing that actually matters.
