We can actually function just fine on low sleep. I think a lot of confusion about health comes from taking the modern medical/fitness idea as the "default" and everything else as "unhealthy" and therefore "will kill you" Remember we evolved to be able to function in the world.https://twitter.com/nickcammarata/status/1314249744500183045 …

There's that but I also think modernity and especially the fraction of modernity that is abstract reasoners is disproportionately likely to care about the effects of sleep dep on the ability to do what they want, as compared to the vast majority of people now and in the past.

sure or to partially restate: only for someone designing a compiler for a programming language or polishing a brief for a hard fought court battle does that last 1% of marginal cognitive ability matter for the other 99% of people / jobs, 75% on top of your game is good enough

20% better caregivers during the most dangerous period of your life is lot of gradient for evolution. Maybe your stomach size & blood glucose theory is right, but are you actually as confident I read your tone to be? Would you bet 5/1 odds if somehow we could get an answer?

I don’t think the sleep dep is causing a 20 percent loss of child care ability, it seems like very little compared to eg, the damage pregnancy can do
