Hence the "micro" in "microstate". When the ruled live in much closer proximity to the ruler such that he may properly fear the gibbet erected on his lawn, his behavior is constricted. Distant, concentrated power was always the problem. (Most of) the founders knew that.

I'm still struck by the knowledge of the President of Iceland picking up hitchhikers without a concern in the world about threats to his personal safety. That's the kind of society everyone deserves.
