The Time My Dad Tried to Drown Me Looking at property to buy took me back to my childhood haunts in rural Minnesota to check things out around my grandparents' old lake cabin. So I decided to check how far I had to swim the time dad tried to drown me. 1/pic.twitter.com/YNpRXP5xSr

/ I'm not sure how old I was, but almost certainly ten or younger. I don't think dad came up there much as I got older and I remember it as being pretty young. I was playing on the beach one day and dad came down and said, "Grab the raft, I'm going to swim across the lake."

/ So I grabbed the raft, which was one of those inflatable loungers you lay on in a pool while drinking beer, and followed him to the water. Dad's not risk-averse & I was fucking ten. Hell, he's only 17-years older than I am, so his brain probably wasn't fully baked yet either.

/ (Clarification: Dad was a hippie. His brain was almost certainly baked.) So dad was going to swim across the lake and his spotter was going to be a ten-year old on an inflatable raft. Well, and a lifejacket we tied to the raft so it trailed behind. Safety first.

/ Dad swam, I knelt on the raft and paddled with my hands, and we made it across to the other side, which, I see now, is about a quarter mile. At which point, dad said, "Okay, you swim back, I'll take the raft."pic.twitter.com/kCKOi9fw0x

/ This, to my 10-year old self, made perfect sense and I did not swim the twenty feet to the far shore, walk up to the road, and call back, "Fuck a bunch of drowning, go get the car and pick me up." Nope. I slipped into the water and started swimming back.

/ It was not an easy swim. It was calm when dad started out, but the wind picked up, crossways, pushing us to the north, so my course back wasn't a straight line. I was a pretty strong swimmer, but that was a hard one. Still, I didn't give up. I swam that fucker, wind and all

/ Proud day in later life, in my 30s, having dinner with dad and reminiscing and him just shaking his head and saying, "I was sure you were going to puss out, but damned if you didn't do it. Tough little fucker."

/ This would not have been the same summer that Grandpa built us kids the rope swing that went out over a 20' cliff with stumps and boulders at the bottom. And by 'swing', I mean a rope swung over a branch with a loop tied in it.

/ You took the rope, grabbed the loop, and ran full tilt at the cliff edge with the rope taut. That swung you in big ol' circle to the other side of the tree where your feet made contact with the top of the cliff there. The instructions were: Don't let go.
