This seems to have an implicit axiom that says that proliferation is bad. I think it's good. Nukes for every state ... and secessionist region!https://twitter.com/robinhanson/status/1312466471818207232 …

There are now 195 nations, 9 of which have nuclear weapons. If world had continued since 1970 to aggressively develop nuclear power, we'd use ~30x as much energy per person now, but there might be N>9 nations w/ nukes. How how an N would it take to make that a bad deal overall?

As a second amendment supporter I'd settle for an EM rail gun powered by a fusion reactor. Commonsense regulation ftw.

perhaps the best situation would be massive nuclear proliferation, plus something like the Eridani Edict where everyone agrees to kick the crap out of anyone who uses nukes first

The wording is targeted to that more common audience, but if you think N is good then picking max N is the way to answer this question.

I like a little more nuance... nukes for Switzerland and Sweden (that the US pressured into neutering themselves), no nukes for North Korea and Pakistan (where the US paid for the nukes and sent them nuclear fuel...) Real weapons to worry about are biological, memetic, drones.

Remember the Probability Broach sequels? You probably recall them better than I do. Anyhoo, one of them addresses the question of whether or not the right to bear arms includes the right to own nuclear weapons. And I see your answer is "yes!"
