For seven decades we programmers rode a technology that was skyrocketing exponentially. We got very accustomed to the rapid change. Now that change has slowed to a near stop; yet we continue to churn our industry as though Moore’s law still ruled.

2/ too busy to do any depth, but - Moore's law still prevails - software capacity has NOT ceased climbing - his list of "advances" is woefully incomplete - weird moralizing with no basis or argument - unsupported claims about "limits of languages"https://twitter.com/BuucketHe4d/status/1312027187248271361 …

4/ His anger at new languages reads very much as an old lazy boomer who doesn't want to keep up and so dismisses everything after C as bogus / an op. ...and then he claims "no new developments". THE LANGUAGES AND FRAMEWORKS *** ARE *** THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS !

5/ All languages are Turing equivalent. And yet I can do more in Ruby in 5 minutes in 2020 than I could do in C in 5 days in 1990. R lets people do statistical analysis in 60 seconds that used to take a custom written program. Rust and Go eliminate entire classes of bugs.

6/ Libraries give us huge new capabilities. I can add one line to a Gem file, import capabilities in off the web, and suddenly do OCR character recognition, or process bar codes, or parse XML. Web services let our programs use third party capabilities. Query warehouses.

7/ for inventory. Have borderline AI translate text into other languages. Take flat images and construct 3-D models from them. I take it from the general boom energy that he's not reading white papers, or even doing stuff like watching "Two Minute Papers" on youtube.

I look forward to a day when the number of languages we use is small — perhaps as small as one. I look forward to a day when the churn of languages, frameworks, and platforms has ended.

9/ In the past few years we've seen cars drive themselves, spaceships land themselves, algorithms teach themselves to play chess and Go better than any human. Change in the software world remains high, and is perhaps accelerating.

Outside of HPC, or massive scale arch, CPU speed really hasn’t been the limiting factor in most cases in years. From an infrastructure POV, my major limiting factor is almost always memory or mass storage. I’d bet the same is true for an Amazon, but I’d be intrigued to know.
