statistics like this are misleading this doesn't mean that the entire population of all cows - they are only counting HOLSTEINS. Which are 28% of dairy cows. Which are 22% of all cows. seems this might be less true for squirrels, bc two squirrels who live 100 miles apart might not be part of the same breeding population (in a meaningful way) but, we ship cows all over the country so

I took "can be tracked to 2 cows" to mean "are descendents of only those two cows" Which, if true, would be quite interesting, but seems unlikely to be true given the desire of breeders to tinker with the breeds (but I don't know enough to rule it out).

And if that's not what they meant, then, well, yes, a large percent of population X have a common ancestor from Y generations back... in fact, they have LOTS of them. But why remark on just two?
