Pedantic observation: southern deer are substantially smaller than northern deer; .223 fine here, while .308 more appropriate in your region.

Not to mention that there are AR-15 chamberings (6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 300 BLK, etc.) that are decent for deer nationwide. But, generally speaking, .223 is a varmint cartridge that can be used for deer under limited circumstances (smaller deer,.etc.). Just my opinion, of course.

Actually with modern loads the venerable .223/5.56 can be an ethical game cartridge, to say nothing of other AR-15 calibers like 6.5 Grendel, which can take an elk.
