Unknown chemistry is on the face of it more likely than unknown biochemistry - but the example of wax-covered leaves suggests that known biochemistry shielding itself is a possibility. So my hunch is tilted negative but not 20 to 1 against.

Good answer, thanks. My priors are that basic life is not that unlikely, and that panspermia, at least between two or three nearby planets in one solar system, is also quite possible, so my world wouldn't be rocked. Would be super exciting, of course!
