the utter tabooing of violence by the upper middle class is interesting and i bet unusual and i also suspect a major, major blind spot

yes, think so - mostly having fun by education / profession / conscientiousness / etc, I am upper middle and every post-college peer has been entirely anti-violence, but I sort of like it and make a conscious decision for Heinleinian reasons to avoid blindspot & not shy away

Where does studying martial arts put someone? Many of the people who pursue that tend to be of the same mindset or abilities as gun owners. They have free time and money to dedicate to the pursuit. I think the type of school you go to tells you a lot about it.

martial arts are tolerated like lifting weights is tolerated, slightly less so even you get side-eyed at least

Interesting, as attending a fencing school which put you through an exercise regimen, taught hand to hand skills, rapier, rapier and dagger, rapier and buckler and so on was very much an upper class thing in Europe some time in the past.

a general guide to class is that if takes special expensive equipment and can only be done with other rich people using expensive equipment, it's high class. Quiet is good. if it's affordable or loud, low class polo vs hockey sailings vs motorboats fencing vs boxing / MMA
