I generally go by what the hosts are doing if I don't know them well. If they have their shoes on, I keep my shoes on. If they remove their shoes, I remove mine.

My dungeon master was the first person I ever met that made me take off my shoes to enter his house. I figured it was a sperg thing.

I think it’s regional/cultural. I was raised to never take off my shoes in another person’s home without asking. (Unless it’s someone I’m close enough to to feel at home.) But more importantly, to never object if they ask me to take them off before coming in.
