A $39k loan for a car would produce a payment in the $800 range *and* be paid off in 5 years. There is zero chance her numbers are right.

I completely agree with your take on this thread, but, I think that compound interest should be illegal or strongly discouraged. At the very least if c.i. is used, there should be a table of total payments over time and effective interest rate at term. "$40k@15yrs=100% interest"
