If men don't roast someone on the team, it usually means they don't take that person seriously.

More women would know this if they spent time with the tomboys, who prefer joshing by males (which is never meant seriously) over the heartfelt vitriol of other females (which is).

Think I actually read a theory somewhere that this is a social behavior we developed to actually curb fights/duels We get to air grievances and criticism as a joke, so it’s out there, but we don’t need to interpret it as an insult to honor It’s a really useful kind of thing

I agree. Throughout my career in the Air Force doing aircraft maintenance, there were never many women. However, those who did work in maintenance held their own quite well in the rough and tumble trash-talking environment. It made for a better work environment.

I found this to be true. I worked through the first wave of "feminism" when it still meant fair treatment. It took patience, a sense of humor, and an understanding of how hard it is to change societal habits in just a few years. It didn't hurt that I'd been a tomboy & liked men.

It is true. I think it is the source of at least some of the “misogynistic gamers/nerds”! screaming. They go into the space expecting to be treated like girls, not realizing what their demands to be treated as one of the group actually means.

I’ve thought about it a lot because pre-wokism I can’t think of very much actual misogyny lobbed my way while spending a lot of time in nerd circles and didn’t personally witness a lot of it either.

I was listening to Jocko podcast with Jonny Kim yesterday and that's litterally what they were talking, that in Seals and army in general they constantly roast each others but if you don't get roasted or can't take a joke, you're not part of the team and will probably not stay
