by "stripped" you mean the slot? to be pedantic "strip" usually means the threads you probably already solve the problem, but if the drive slot is bunged up, grip with pliers (vice grip ideally, but any will do) and back out

Yes, the slot. I was reaching at an angle and the drill bit stayed in contact when it was a little out. I can’t decide if it’s far enough in for my purposes or if I should fix

And I didn’t know that actually, I’d heard stripped used in this way but maybe it’s a widespread error. How would the threads get screwed up?

metal bolt in a metal threaded hole actually "stripped the slot" is probably a phrase that's used, but without qualifier, I think of cross threaded. ....but maybe I'm wrong! Yes, googling suggests that your usage is common. I retract!
