You know, though, the older I get the more I think that there is real truth to this sentiment despite it chafing when I was younger. I can't think of any group of people in history that didn't operate as a hierarchical system, regardless of the fancy labels and flower language

Yeah... something like this crystallized for me after numerous arguments with Lefties on things like free healthcare. I'd say "do X, and you probably won't need it to be free". They'd spout off increasingly unlikely scenarios as reasons why this wouldn't work.
