"Felony conspiracy to destroy monument" and "felony destruction of a monument"? ...seriously? ...if a "violent mob", was anybody hurt? Or was it just the feelings of people who like the monument?

I have no problem with destruction of property being a felony. It sets the incentives correctly, if nothing else. This isn't a starving person who stole one apple.

I'm OK with protesters tearing down monuments that honor those who fought for a viciously pro-slavery government. To me, having a monument to such people very much sets incentives incorrectly.

this is an interesting non-content-neutral stance are you also OK with me defacing a MLK statue? I assume not, because he's one of the good guys / on your team. Not a fan of rule of law being subordinated to "my team's politics".

I'd argue that the correct approach is the populace voting on the matter, and the losing side dealing with it. That's the general theme of democracy, no? I find Social Security to be an odious socialist program. Should burning down a SS office be a misdemeanor?

Neat-o. Virginia's post-Reconstruction govt disenfranchised its black residents and then had the only people it counted as human, engage in debate over what monuments to put up...

Disenfranchiseding blacks is a fine start, but the job isn't done until Everyone is disenfranchised!
