Been thinking about Jackson Kernion and his life in the city a lot recently as I walk around my 56 acre farm in a small town with a roughly 0 crime rate. Peach and mulberry trees are bearing. Delicious.pic.twitter.com/S9DxqfbK9a

Speaking of... I know you're in TX, what USDA zone are you in, can you recommend any productive trees for 8a? (besides figs...)

He's not in Texas but I am, and I'm in 8a... Our Compound is somewhere between Houston and Austin. Just put in the orchard this spring: Figs (of course), Satsuma (very freeze-hardy citrus), loquat (impossible to kill), pear, blueberries, blackberries. Ask away.

The trick is picking the spot. Soil varies tremendously in former/current Ag areas; we have from near sand, to brutal cly, sometimes 20 yards apart. You could go nuts and replace enough for each tree but... Expensive, hassle. So I drilled a few 9'' auger holes to prospect.

I'm kind of worried about that, I definitely have primarily clay soil.

Don't worry too much. It's fertile, just needs organic matter. Find a neighbor with a fuggin HEAVY disk. Buy some hay, dolomitic lime, and calcium sulfate aka gypum. Till it. Cover with heavy black plastic weed cloth to sucker them into sprouting THEN DYING HAHAHAHA

agree w most of that, but unclear on the lime lime is used to make soil more basic. If soil is acidic, sure, but a priori, no reason to assume it is (clays don't lean that way, tho can be)

Agreed. Texas clay is heavily buffered, so pH doesn't react much. Plus this isn't raw lime like quicklime, it's just calcium salts. The calcium helps break up the clay.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, it also is counterproductive for accelerating the decomposition of organic matter.
