11/ what if 'poetry' isn't really an artform, but just a memetic honeypot, tempting people to their doom?https://twitter.com/JohnTaloni/status/1293998585139220480 …

I remember as a child, fed on a steady diet of Tolkien and Brian Jacques, thinking that to write fantasy, you had to include a bunch of cringey songs and poems. That was the rules.

i prefer to think of them not as Tolkien's songs, but just Middle-Earth's songs you're taking a hike two towns over, and your buddy breaks into a warbling rendition of The Road Goes Ever On, but everybody humours him because it's his favourite

I read *Exploring J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'* by Corey Olsen which did line-by-line commentaries on all the songs and poems. "Oh shit, there's actually a lot of gold in them there hills."

I think Tolkien's poetry is mostly really good, but reading poetry takes a different frame of mind from reading prose, so poems embedded in a prose narrative are usually kind of wasted (unless you go back just to read the poems)

I feel there's a cutoff. Blake was amazing, for instance. Or, perhaps, the old stuff is good because most of the doggerel from 200 years ago has been mercifully lost.

One that stands out as a keeper to me: “All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. 1/2
