Truth is not a boolean. Things can be more or less true. Truth is AT LEAST a two dimensional space.

/ I first got a glimpse into this when I was around 13 and read Tales of the Flying Mountains. It's a "fixup" novel (i.e. a bunch of short stories later tied together with interstitial material to make a novel, of sorts), and >>> https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1369358.Tales_of_the_Flying_Mountains …pic.twitter.com/J2k50Obn1k

/ the framing / connecting tissue is that a society that evolved in the asteroid belt is trying to create a curriculum to explain their culture to the future generations. The first question is "what should we say?" The first answer is "the truth, of course!"

/ And the immediate rebuttal is "The truth? All of it? Every single day in every single one of millions of lives, for decades / centuries? That's impossible. We must prune and simplify." Heady stuff for a 12 or 13 year old.

/ uh... "Time" is not an actor. Individuals simplify and write histories.https://twitter.com/_ragegun/status/1293637906846949379 …

/ > at any precisely enough defined point. So you've just taken the complexity that I spoke of and moved it out of the datum and into the meta-data. That seems... trivial/ boring, no?https://twitter.com/SquaresToCubes/status/1293638913219682304 …

/ It's like if I say "on an insanely stormy sea, the exact interface between 'water' and 'air' becomes hard to pin down" and you say "ah, to the contrary, if I define 'water' as any cubic centimeter w density D (specified to 8 places), then it's very easy" THAT'S THE POINT

/ btw, want to circle back to Poul Anderson. One of the things that makes me sick about the modern state of SF is that the kids haven't read the classics, and so they reinvent stuff, [ extremely ] poorly.https://twitter.com/MorlockP/status/1293637088823390209 …

/ > Truth is boolean OK, I accept that that is your argument, but that is exactly contradictory to my statement / argument. I don't see any reason in your tweet to change my mind / accept your assertion.https://twitter.com/SquaresToCubes/status/1293640695333285888 …

Tyler DIR DIN @SquaresToCubesReplying to @MorlockPNo. It'd be more as if your initial claim was 'some things are neither water nor air.' Truth is boolean. Molecules have a definite type. That both are often hard (or pointless) to describe as such is also true. My only point was the *problem space* is n-dimensional, not truth.2 replies 0 retweets 1 likeShow this thread
