The farther back they go, the better. Tolkien read Beowulf and so on; Terry Brooks and Stephen R Donaldson read Tolkien. Bob Dylan listens to old blues and reads Shakespeare.

Yeah. I had another discussion with a friend today about how D&D has a massive influence over all fantasy, and game design, including, video games (including sci-fi), and thus as you describe; the feedback loop into books. There's a huge disconnect.

Which is too bad. Reading the classics gives you new appreciation for those movies and games. Especially the games as a lot of designers have read those classics.
