Requirement #2 was efficient use of space: the kitchen is about 8'x10', undersized for the house. And requirement #3 was price; this whole house project has been, very much, a champagne renovation on a beer budget, as it were. (4/)

So, bearing requirement #2 in mind, #3 becomes a job of creatively assembling budget items. The floor tile, wall tile, and decorative inserts were all from the Habitat Restore. (6/)pic.twitter.com/hEyjF2XCec

The cabinets as well. But the Restore didn't have a complete set; we've got a variety of profiles and finishes there, all--i hope--playing together nicely! The lower cabinets didn't really have any options for layout, and thankfully they worked. The uppers... (6/)pic.twitter.com/NQLkZ4kk9X

They took several tries. The angled corner cabinet was originally over the dishwasher. Then it moved. Then the fridge cabinet had to come down to be shimmed off the wall to match the depth... (7/)pic.twitter.com/yFznyRVvbk

Then the door went on the corner cabinet, and--whoops--it hits the range hood. So the spacers around that had to be remade asymmetrically. Starting from scratch would have been easier, but these were the cabinets I had, for damn close to free. (8/)pic.twitter.com/X4euHC73SB

This corner was a good chunk of the total time & budget; the room is too small to sacrifice the space under the staircase, so it called for custom builds--designed to fit an extra matching door I'd found. That cabinet has a blind storage space that goes back half its width. (8/pic.twitter.com/ZzyT8EgPxf

Lower cabinets were much simpler, but they got one custom build to make the spacing work--this pull-out pantry. The carcass was from scratch, but I'll confess the shelving came from Amazon. (10/)pic.twitter.com/CXzvopZokI

The lower cabinets I had available meant I had to put in an 18" dishwasher--from the Restore--which is a shame. But it did mean there was space for a full-sized pullout trash/recycling bin; also why the sink ended up off-centered, to give vertical clearance for the trash. (11/)pic.twitter.com/j8OIXYM8Dr

Also in terms of space-saving innovations, possibly my favorite: I realized that there was a big void under the stairs, so why not shove a Nook in there? Width just fits between studs, height sized to fit a normal wine bottle. (12/)pic.twitter.com/uD0FnLEZ4d

It's funny, even with adding the LED bar, it's probably the simplest thing in this project, but I love it.

have you read "A Pattern Language" ? if this isn't in there, it should be certainly it is, at a sufficiently abstract level - little surprises
