decent chance that it's true, but also decent chance that it's false actors are ACTORS and so you can never trust anything that's said in an interview or a press tour - "I did my own stunts", "I fell in love with the costar", etc - these are all KNOWN STORIES that are useful
I've done enough amateur acting to know that you don't have to know much about what you're pretending to do in order to pretend to do it. No way would anyone waste time teaching actors how to really cheat at cards just to make a movie about cheating at cards.
Actors spend most of their time learning how to do mundane things very convincingly. Like a smoker can spot a non-smoker pretending to smoke at a glance. Someone who uses a shovel all day can spot someone who's never held a shovel right away. That kind of stuff.
All in all, a career in acting isn't the worst way to learn how to hold a pistol while riding a horse.
>No way would anyone waste time teaching actors how to really cheat at cards just to make a movie about cheating at cards. Can't vouch for it, but the article I'm reading quotes the actors talking about how much they were coached on poker, card handling, and cheating.
If you're curious, here it is. It's long but I enjoyed it. https://www.theringer.com/movies/2018/9/20/17878996/rounders-oral-history-matt-damon-ed-norton-poker-brian-koppelman-david-levien …
Also, it's not very hard to cheat at cards, especially if you're doing it to people who don't play cards often (like presumably the Weinsteins, who probably threw their poker party as a tie-in to the upcoming release of the movie). You could teach anyone to do it quickly.
I suppose that does lend some plausibility to the story. FWIW, Rounders is one of my favorite films and an absolute showcase piece for anyone who wants to understand the flavor of 90s cinema. (I am so pissed at all these 90s-set nostalgia films that don't even look like the 90s.)
I mean, look at these saturated colors! The high contrast. The warm palette! The almost nauseating push on the greens/yellows. This is what 90s cinema looks like. It's like 70s cinema without the grain.pic.twitter.com/qbdKpvSisP
agreed, also one of my favorite films
I still say Ms. Marvel would've been 2x better (that's not saying a lot) if they had just respected 90s cinematography.
