Still need to buy a quarter or half share of a cow and fill our freezer so we can stay home more fully and just feast on pot roast while the world slowly succumbs to the plague. Keep putting it off for some reason.

I mean I know why. It's because after seeing the prices for a full cow at auction, I am having a hard time pulling the trigger on a more market-ready quarter cow. Despite the fact that I'm missing the crucial step of where to store auction cow btwn purchase and slaughter.

Also no way to transport cow. How far can slaughter ready cows walk. Think I could probably convince someone near the auction house to watch my cow for a week.

do you have a pickup, or can you borrow one? heck, you could rent a truck from Home Depot or U-Haul are you allowed to shoot a cow at the auction yard?

You can put a cow in a pickup? Surely it needs to be enclosed? What if it escapes? Neighbor has a pickup. Possibly would let us borrow it in exchange for meat. But also, as you say, truck rentals exist.

There's a few slaughter + butcher ops around; right now a lot of them do only processing of animals they also slaughter, so I need the animal alive

talk to them about transporters; you might be able to get someone they work with regularly to move a cow 5 miles in a trailer for $80 or something
