1/ I saw a really dumb argument recently: 70% of covid transmission happens INSIDE families, and only 30% BETWEEN families, therefore wearing masks outside is silly. First: cutting total transmissions, somehow, anyhow, by 1/3 can push R0 below 1.0, thus ending the pandemic. >>

4/ When fighting forest fires, fire fighters build fire breaks to isolate one section of a forest from another, with the idea of letting one area burn until the fire is out, and keeping another area pristine. ...they don't let a tree trunk burn but try to save the branches.

If nothing else, extremely localized herd immunity means "All we have is in-family transmission" burns out fast. /In practice, 2 week lockdowns wouldn't cut it, you'd need 2-3 months like Europe (or "China is no longer visible from space"). But.

I remember how surprising it was when it was explained that the fire department doesn’t exist to save the burning house. It exists to save the neighborhood. I like the analogy here.
