1/ I'm a little confused by people getting PhDs and then, at the ripe of old age of 28 or so, bitching that there are no jobs I was in college 28 years ago, and everyone THEN talked about how there were no jobs for PhDs

Conventional wisdom and cultural norms are very slow to update. Science advances one funeral at a time. Most people, as long as their parents are alive, generally do what their parents expect of them. And what parents expect is based on what their own parents expected of them.

Three out of four of my grandparents went to university (or teacher-training college) and got middle class jobs. My parents were also able to follow this path in the 80s. Their baseline expectation was that their children would be able to do the same.

The school system still pushes heavily to get a college education, and "better degree = better pay" was pushed constantly to me when I was in high school, and the actual cost was usually brushed aside. all that plus how much of a status symbol a phd is i think contributes heavily

Idgi, when people say there are no jobs for PhDs, in what field are they referring to? There’s no small number of positions for PhDs in biotech/pharma/etc.

I think PhD candidates are 1. desperately trying to stay in academia 2. in love with becoming a professor to be on top of the academia pyramid. Same psychology as the kids wanting to be an Olympic or NFL/NBA athlete.

Once upon a time I gave serious thought to getting a PhD, but it would have been on my employer's nickle and with agreement that I'd return to my job after finishing it.

I started PhD in 2007, there were mixed messages at the time bc recent PhDs were having hard time getting jobs but old clueless professors were still encouraging everyone to enter grad school. However most ppl seem to have gotten the message in the past 10+ years at least
