2/ I can understand the angst of someone who grew up in the 1970s when there were jobs for PhDs, going to college, graduating in 1980, getting a PhD in 1986 or so, and being upset that the landscape had changed and there were far fewer jobs, university staffing being done

3/ ...but how can you be BORN into a world where there are no jobs for PhDs, go to elementary school in that world, go to middle school in that world, go to high school in that world, go to college in that world, get a PhD in that world ... and THEN bitch "I was misled !!1!" ?

and around the same time my parents, one of whom had a PhD, the other a masters degree, advised me not to pursue a career in academia because everyone knew the postwar expansion of the field was long over. (Among other reasons)

Saw this during MA ~2009. Told myself I'd only do a PhD if I got into a great program. I did, but saw people still w/o real jobs after 7 years + 2 more as adjunct, so I dropped out after 1 semester. Taught myself to code. Next step: start a farm. If only there were a guide! :)

Would be nice if someone were to write something like that. Maybe even do a Kickstarter for it. I think it would do really well.

p much all the phd people ive witness were involved in academia only. its rather a side-effect of the degree you're getting than the knowledge id presume. you got really good job chances in a large branch of the sciences AFAIK

I looked at career salary data for PhDs in EE and decided to quit at MSEE. Joke was on me though—they don’t want to pay diddly for that degree either. Now I break rocks for a living.

Started in liberal arts in 2013, done a MLA and thinking about doctorate. Thought about it and decided to go in a foreign country for a year. Meanwhile, my mates who graduated told me how working as a teacher was absolute crap. Changed my mind & went in business school 3y later

Didn't graduated btw but still better than trapping myself in academia.
