Geneva as it looked in 1850 is a near perfect example of traditional European urbanism, before cars, chain stores, suburbs. Sharply defined: the city gives way to the countryside just across the street, respecting the integrity of both rural and urban ways of life. pic.twitter.com/llDbdNhCdz

The fact that we're not life-or-death forced to limit cities does not mean that limiting cities is a bad thing now. Dense urban spaces surrounded by thinly settled nature/countryside are better than endless suburban sprawl for a number of reasons.

General livability, energetic and material efficiency, ecological footprint, cultural dynamicism, probably some criteria I'm forgetting. May I ask whether you live in the suburbs? Most people I've met who do would prefer living in either the city or the countryside.

I live on a 56 acre farm. I like it. I used to live in the suburbs. I liked that too. I lived in the city - didn't like that at all.

One advantage of delimited, decentral urbanism would be that people could live fully rural lifestyles even in close vicinity of a city (and therefore profiting from the urban economy and trade). The boundary between city and countryside would be sharper.

a very large percent of people seem to want to live in neither city nor in country, but in suburbs your proposal makes them choose between two choices and discards a third why punish people / restrict freedom this way?

Also, you can still have mid-density satellite settlements even with delimited cities. I'd argue they would be more livable if they were agglomerated and interspersed though, more similar to village settlements or small towns than modern sprawl.

/shrug that doesn't seem to be what people want there's this valuable resource, in between two spread out cities, that's close to both of them LOTS of people want to live there, and thus the natural response is density you want to prevent that, limiting that location to a few

I mean, if in your region people want suburbs qua suburbs, that's fine. It doesn't match my experience with people's priorities here, and I'd be interested in seeing where the divergence lies, but imposing structures on an unwilling population is the last thing I'd want.
